HISTORY

NHS Development Corporation (NHSDC) is a subsidiary of Neighborhood Housing Services of Jamaica Inc.(NHSJ). NHSDC is a non-profit organization whose mission is to ensure the long-term economic stability of our community by providing affordable housing and other economic development opportunities to low-and moderate-income families.

Until 2009, NHS of Jamaica operated under the umbrella of Neighborhood Housing Services of New York City (NHSNYC). As such, all housing development between 1998 and 2008 was done under the auspices of NHSNYC.

In the aftermath of the foreclosure crisis (with Jamaica being Ground Zero) and Super Storm Sandy, we thought that it was imperative that we answer the call to help solve some of the problems related to the home affordability crisis in New York City. As homelessness rises and wages remain stagnant, residents are overwhelmed by the challenges to accessing affordable housing. In 2013 NHSDC reactivated the Development Corporation and soon thereafter began negotiations to purchase two properties in Jamaica. We have purchased one, completely renovated it and sold it to a low-income community resident. We are currently trying to purchase the second property so that we could provide a home to a deserving family who is in desperate need of rental housing. Additionally, we have partnered with a for-profit developer, the Archer Companies to build 89 units of affordable housing in Jamaica. The Project should be completed in the Summer of 2017.
